Biography:
Sy Thomas is a presenter, actor and stand-up comedian.
Sy broke into the world of presenting at kids channel Nickelodeon, where he had begun working on the live breakfast show ‘The Crunch’ playing small comedy characters. However, Sy made such an impression at Nick, that within a few months they’d offered him a presenting role, and from there he went on to front all of the channel’s live studio projects and continuity links for nearly 2 years - hosting the massive live summer shows ‘Slime Across the Uk’ and ‘Summer on Nick, and the BAFTA award winning half-term show ‘ME:TV’. He also flew out to cover the ‘Kids Choice Awards’ in Los Angeles, and followed that by co-hosting the first ever ‘UK KCAs’ alongside McFly. During his time at Nickelodeon, Sy interviewed numerous Hollywood A-Listers, got covered in hundreds of buckets of slime, and frequently dressed up as a cockney Tomcat.
Having cut his teeth as a presenter at Nick, Sy’s warmth, charm, and humour have brought along further presenting opportunities and appearances for many other companies and channels, including MTV, Virgin, RDF, Vodafone and CBBC. Most recently Sy has been covering red-carpet film premieres, band interviews, and on-the-street vox-pops, for entertainment show ‘Unlimited’ on Facebook.
Sy is also an accidental adventurer/documentary presenter, as in 2006 he and fellow comedian Alexis Dubus attempted the ‘Plymouth to Banjul Challenge’ - travelling 4000 miles through West Africa, across 8 countries and the Sahara desert in a clapped-out car bought for £100. The film ‘End of the Road,’ documenting their epic voyage, made by award-winning filmmaker Richard Nicholls from Swift Films, has recently been completed.
As a stand-up comedian Sy has performed at clubs throughout the UK, including the Amused Moose, Comedy Café, Jongleurs, The Komedia, The Pleasance, London and Edinburgh, and the Comedy Store, London and Manchester - as well as regularly at venues for Off the Kerb, CKP and Mirth Control. His cheeky, friendly manner, and natural improvisational ability, make him an extremely popular and in-demand compere - and he has been honing his skills as resident co-host at the highly regarded ‘Falling Down with Laughter’ in London Bridge, which won ‘Best Small London Comedy Venue’ at the 2008 Chortle Awards.
In 2009 Sy and fellow comedian and flatmate Simon Feilder began filming some short comedy sketches on their sofa. This snowballed and ‘Life of Si’ was formed, culminating in their debut show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where their blend of videos, double act-style banter and misguided tomfoolery received rave reviews from audiences and press alike:
***** 'It's been a long time since I've seen a comedy duo with such raw talent… set to be big news in the near future.' (Allthefestivals.com)
**** 'Extremely talented...charming and captivating entertainers' (Edinburghlove.com)
'Slickly presented and exuding chemistry...an enjoyable hour spent with an amiable pair' (The List)
'Sizzling chemistry...impeccable timing...a "si-zable" success' (ThreeWeeks)
Off the back of their festival success, coupled with a constantly updated online presence, ‘Life of Si’ have gone on to film promos for CBBC’s Bamzooki, a number of ‘seasonal’ sketches for Wordia.com, and in 2010 are performing at festivals in Leicester, Brighton, Los Angeles (honestly!) and Edinburgh again, with their follow-up show ‘Life of Si: Si Harder’.
Sy’s wide-ranging comedy acting skills have also been put to use in the now-defunct-but-much-loved sketch group ‘Cat of the Week’, and most recently, as the main role in Vodafone’s huge viral film ‘Office Grand Prix’ alongside Lewis Hamilton, which amassed 1million views in it’s first week online, and won a bronze lion at the 2009 Cannes International Advertising Festival, and a silver arrow at the 2009 British Television Advertising Awards. He has also filmed street-based vox-pops and japery for Virgin Mobile; and can currently be seen ‘disbelieving his gran’ in a major new advertising campaign for Volkswagen. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time until Vision Express come knocking.
Outside of his career, Sy is passionate about sport, music and film. His main love is for football, where his obsessive following of the ‘glamorous’ League 2 club Wycombe Wanderers FC, probably explains the need to search for fun, success, and laughter within his career!
