Biography:
Ian Smith is a bright young talent who has been described as "fantastically funny" by The Times and a "star of the future" by Timeout.
Despite his young age Ian has been delighting audiences and gaining the respect of critics for over three years with his downbeat observations and uniquely warped trains of thought. Having won the Newbury Comedy Festival's competition 'You Must Be Joking' in 2009, he has gone on to cement his reputation as one of the brightest young comics around, placing second in 'Comedy Central's Funniest Student' and appearing in the final of Chortle's student competition in 2010 for the second time. Ian was also named one of the '10 comics to look out for in 2011' by Londonisfunny.com.
In 2010, Ian was part of The Lunchtime Club during the Edinburgh Fringe (**** - Three Weeks, The British Comedy Guide, Hairline), a showcase of 5 young stand-ups which has proved itself to be a respected launch pad for the potential comedy stars of tomorrow.Originally from East Yorkshire, Ian is now based in London having graduated from Goldsmiths in 2010. His 2011 Edinburgh Fringe show with Rob Beckett received critical acclaim and was regularly voted one of the top free Fringe shows of the festival.
Alongside his burgeoning stand-up career, last year Ian worked on various TV projects including a regular role in BBC 2 series 'Popatron' and a BBC pilot. This year his credits include Kay Mellor's BBC 1 Drama 'The Syndicate' and critically acclaimed series 'White Heat', also on BBC 1. Ian has just finished filming 'Back of the Net!', a short film he co-wrote with Ben Ashenden and Jamie Adams. He also starred in 'Bonsai', another short which received a special mention in Sundance London's short film competition.
- ...he's a smart operator with an appealing manner and can expect a fruitful comedy career ahead. - Steve Bennett, Chortle.
He's got some lovely, distinctive material and, crucially, an understated confidence which means he can deconstruct his set and ironically commentate on the reaction without it seeming too self-satisfied - a poise beautifully demonstrated when a glass clattered to the ground as he reached the climax of his set, and he incorporated it seamlessly. With his delightfully offbeat writing, he displays a mastery of phrasing, and summons up some fine comic images. A talent, for sure.
- a real sparky presence onstage... ebullient and witty. - Londonisfunny.com.
